Where to get help in Mexico

Línea de la Vida answers free of charge and in confidence on 800 911 2000, twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. It covers substance use and addictive behaviour, gambling included, and it also takes calls from family members.

The situation does not have to be serious to call. It works just as well for asking a question, for getting your bearings, or for finding out what options exist nearby. A call commits you to nothing.

Signs that do not depend on any number

  • Playing to recover losses rather than for entertainment.
  • Hiding how much has been played, or for how long.
  • Borrowing, taking advances or using money meant for something else in order to continue.
  • Postponing obligations, plans or commitments for a session.
  • Noticing that it stopped being fun and carrying on anyway.
  • Arguing with someone close about the time or money spent gambling.
  • Needing progressively larger stakes to feel the same thing.

Any one of the seven is a reason to stop at that moment, not on reaching a limit. None depends on whether you are up or down that night: they are signs about the relationship with gambling, not about the result.

Three limits that work

  1. How much. The amount you can lose outright without anything changing in your month. Not what you expect to spend: what you can lose. Carry it in cash and leave the card outside.
  2. How long. An hour by the clock, with an alarm. Time distorts faster than money, especially on a floor with no windows and no clocks.
  3. Down to what loss. The point where you stop even with money and time left. It is the hardest to respect and the only one that prevents the sessions people remember badly.

All three are decided before walking in. Decided halfway through, they stop being limits and become a negotiation with yourself, which is almost always lost.

The sign a limit broke

Not running out of money — that was planned. It is going back to the cash desk to exchange more than you had decided. That movement, rather than the loss, marks the point where the night stopped following the plan.

If it happens, the useful response is not to forbid yourself anything in that instant — it does not work — but to step outside for five minutes. Changing location breaks the momentum far better than any resolution made in front of the desk.

The arithmetic worth being clear about

In every casino game the advantage sits with the house. That is not a suspicion: it is the margin that sustains the business, and it is built into the rules of each game, into the price of a bingo card and into every spin of a machine.

No betting system changes it. Doubling after a loss, following numbers that are “due”, waiting for a turn — all rest on the same false premise, that the past influences the next play. It does not. Progressions also run into two very real limits: your bankroll and the table maximum, which exists precisely for that.

That is why gambling is not a way to earn money, and why no promotion turns it into one.

If you are supporting someone else

Línea de la Vida also takes calls from family members. Raising the subject without accusation and at a calm moment works better than doing it after a long session.

Two things help concretely: not funding sessions or covering gambling debts, because that removes the consequence without addressing the cause; and not letting the conversation become a negotiation about amounts, which moves the problem onto the wrong ground.
